Officials say overdoses show increase of heroin availability

CLARKSBURG — Four suspected heroin overdoses over the weekend in Clarksburg underscore how prevalent the addictive drug is in the area, according to drug-control advocates.

Two people died and two others were hospitalized late Friday night and Saturday as a result of suspected heroin overdoses, Clarksburg Police Chief Robbie Hilliard said.

“There’s always overdoses, but it was just an unusual number that happened in a span of two days,” Hilliard said.

Detectives are awaiting autopsy results on the two men who died and blood results on the two who were hospitalized to confirm heroin was in their systems, Hilliard said.

John Walker, chairman of the Greater Harrison Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, said heroin and prescription narcotics are the two most abused drugs in the area.

Heroin is coming into the region from areas as close as Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio, and as far away as Detroit, said Walker, who is also Bridgeport’s police chief.
