GRAFTON, W.Va. — A rehabilitated bald eagle was released back into the wild Sept. 17 on the shores of Tygart Lake State Park.

More than 200 people gathered by the lake to see the release of Liberty, a young bald eagle nursed back to health by the West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center, a Fairmont-based nonprofit organization dedicated to education and the care of injured birds of prey.

Michael Book, founder and director of the West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center, said Liberty came to the center just prior to the Fourth of July (hence her name). The bird was found resting on the side of a truck in a Kingwood dealership. The eagle previously suffered tissue damage from a collision.

“It was enough that she couldn’t fly efficiently enough to feed herself,” Book said, adding that Liberty was very dehydrated and emaciated when found but is now strong enough to fly and hunt.
