LOGAN, W.Va. — On Thursday, two students at Justice Elementary School in Logan received the biggest and, certainly, the best surprise imaginable — their father.

Staff Sergeant Anthony May with the United States Air Force had been deployed to the small Middle Eastern country of Qatar for nearly seven months when he finally got his ticket home. May, who is originally from Omar, has completed two active-duty deployments and served a total of eight years in the Air Force. While deployed, May worked to coordinate air strikes in the ongoing fight against religious radicalism.

“I finally got back to West Virginia late last night and it was hard not to go and see them. I miss my girls,” May said as he waited to be introduced to the packed gymnasium at Justice Grade School. May’s wife Kim, his parents Roger and Sherry and his brother Adrian had helped to orchestrate the special meeting between the returning veteran and his children.

Superintendent of Logan County Schools Phyllis Doty, member of the Logan County Board of Education Phyllis Adkins and principal of Justice Elementary School Whitney Dingess were all on hand to witness the heart-felt reunion and personally thank May for his service to the country.

For a only a slight moment, Mollie and Maggie May (who are in kindergarten and first grade, respectively) seemed to have trouble processing that their father was finally home…
