Beloved statue back in place in Elkins

Inter-Mountain photo by Beth Christian Broschart Minnehaha, legendary wife of Hiawatha, is placed back on her pedestal at the intersection of Randolph Avenue and 11th Street after being painted and repaired by Bob Snelson of Bob’s Painting of Beverly. Snelson said the renovation took approximately 24 hours, noting he repainted, reattached fringes on Minnehaha’s dress, rebuilt the base of the statue and fixed a hole in her eye and chin. The statue, which weighs approximately 800 pounds, was erected in 1983 and was created by Frank Ours, of Signs by Ours in Parsons. The original statue was made from concrete, but it crumbled and toppled in 1986. After 15 months, Minnehaha returned to Elkins, this time made from fiberglass. This is the third time Minnehaha has been painted by Snelson – once in 2000 and again in 2005. Bob and Cay Wood, owners of Hiawatha’s, said they were pleased with the repairs and glad to see the renovated Minnehaha back welcoming visitors to Elkins.
