We hope Americans continue to feel safe

An editorial from The Times West Virginian

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Hershel “Woody” Williams, nearing 92 years of age, is quite an accomplished speaker.

The only living Congressional Medal of Honor winner from West Virginia, the Fairmont native stirred things up at the Boys State camp at Jackson’s Mill last week with just a simple sentence: “Did you feel safe when you woke up this morning?”

Toni Ricer wrote about his remarks in her “Good Morning” column in the Times West Virginian on Wednesday. She attended Williams’ speech and reported that every hand went up. Everyone apparently felt safe when they awakened that morning, and why shouldn’t they?

Our country was not at war as it was back when Williams was a youngster and went off to the war at the age of 18.

Think about it for a moment. Our country certainly is at war, although it’s a different type of war than U.S. troops were involved in during World War II…
