State lawmakers should heed firefighters’ advice

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — House Bill 2199 should receive strong consideration from state lawmakers this legislative session.

The bill would increase the surcharge on fire and casualty insurance from .55 percent to 1 percent, generating an additional $12 million to be distributed to fire departments across the state.

 But as state lawmakers ponder aspects of the bill, they would be wise to heed the advice of firefighters from across the state.

Currently the bill calls for all the additional revenue to go to “fire service.”
