MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — An immense sense of sadness struck WVU senior point guard Linda Stepney as she peeked at the Coliseum scoreboard, on Sunday, March 29.
Her women’s basketball team trailed Villanova, 62-58, with 29.1 seconds to play in this WNIT quarterfinals contest.
Would this be Stepney’s final game in a WVU uniform?
“My eyes started to water,” said Stepney, who pondered that very question.
Then she caught herself.
“I was like, ‘No, we have to pick it up,’ ” she said. “I wasn’t ready for my season to end.”
She made sure it didn’t.
Stepney scored on a layup to pull WVU within two and then helped force a turnover on the full-court press that sent the game into overtime.
The Mountaineers never trailed in the extra session on their way to a 75-70 victory…
