WVU purchase of Beckley campus awaits federal OK

BECKLEY, W.Va. — West Virginia University’s purchase of the Mountain State University Beckley campus is on hold, waiting for federal approval, because grant money was used for the construction of two buildings.

Rob Alsop, WVU’s vice president for Legal, Government, and Entrepreneurial Engagement, said Tuesday that Wiseman Hall, which housed the nursing program and laboratories, and the Student Union Building, which has a cafeteria and resource center, were both constructed using federal grant funds.

 When ownership transfers, Alsop said the federal agencies had to be notified and approve the use of the buildings, otherwise the grant money would have to be repaid.

It’s a bit of a hiccup in the plan to finalize the purchase, but Alsop says once the 30-day approval period is over, which is soon, the state’s flagship university should be on track to take over the Beckley campus.

“I don’t think anyone perceives any issues at this time,” Alsop said.”(We’re) just waiting for the final hurdle.”
