WV teen killed during bow-and-arrow game

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A 15-year-old boy playing with friends Saturday was fatally struck by an arrow, according to West Virginia State Police.

Trooper R.D. Holden II, of the Madison detachment, said three 15-year-old boys were taking turns running across the yard and shooting arrows at each other. They were at one of the boy’s homes in Manila, near the Boone/Logan border.

“They were basically dodging arrows,” Holden said.

Troopers at the Madison detachment declined to name the boy but State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said his name was Caleb Fairchild.

No parents were around when Fairchild and two other minors were playing in the front yard of a home, State Police Sgt. C.R. Sutphin in Danville told the Associated Press, and the motivation behind the game wasn’t immediately clear.

Holden said the boys said they were mostly aiming at each other’s feet, but that one of the arrows struck Fairchild’s head…
