WV mom accused of putting fecal matter in son’s IV

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Mingo County mother put fecal matter into her 9-year-old son’s IV while he was being treated at an Ohio hospital, officials say.

Candida Fluty, 35, of Kermit, was indicted on two counts of felonious assault and two counts of endangering children, Hamilton County, Ohio Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced Tuesday.

The child, referred to only as E.F. because of his age, was born with Hirschsprung’s disease, a congenital condition that affects the colon and causes problems with passing stool. It occurs when muscles of the colon are missing nerve cells. It is treated with surgery to remove or bypass the part of the colon that lacks nerve cells.

E.F. has had multiple surgeries and also used a colostomy bag.

He began receiving treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2011.

Deters alleges that Fluty put fecal matter in E.F.’s IV after E.F’s last admission to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

“Although rare, we have seen similar cases with similar motivations,” Deters said in a release. “I’m just grateful that it was caught before we were confronted with a murder case…
