Theatre West Virginia about to open 54th season

BECKLEY, W.Va. — While many were skeptical about his endeavor to bring Theatre West Virginia back to life, Scott Hill, with the help of many devoted actors, actresses and volunteers, have resurrected the theater for its 54th season.

Opening night will be held July 11. There will be 17 performances of “Hatfields and McCoys” shown through Aug. 2, with the exception of Monday and Tuesday nights.

Volunteers have spent the last month cleaning, cutting grass, painting and performing other necessary tasks before opening night, Hill said, and the finishing touches will be completed over the next 10 days.

“It was a brutal winter. The snow was packed on and we had to revamp the stage,” Hill said.

The stage has since been repaired, painted and is ready for action — the focus is now on the sound equipment and lighting.

This week, the actors will be rehearsing in uptown Beckley at the John W. Eye Center at the University of Charleston-Beckley.

Hill said aside from the technicians, Grandview will be quiet for the next few days, but rehearsals will begin at the outdoor amphitheater next week.
