One of five new solar recycling compactors sits in front of the East End Bazaar on Washington Street in Charleston. East End Main Street is putting other compactors at Appalachian Power Park, Capitol Market, the East End Dog Park and the Living AIDS Memorial Garden.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Monsters are invading Charleston’s East End.
The five environmentally minded characters — Chuck, [re]Vive, [re]Cycle, [re]Use and [re]Duce — are featured on new solar-powered compactors throughout the business district.
Charleston Main Streets Director Ric Cavender said the project is part of Eco East End — a “green” initiative of East End Main Street.
“It’s certainly not going to create any jobs, we know that, but it’s going to beautify the district by keeping it clean,” Cavender said.
While East End Main Street is a business and economic development organization, Cavender said it pursues environmental projects when they relate to the business district.
The three compactors already installed are located on Morris Street at Appalachian Power Park and on Washington Street East at the East End Bazaar and the Living AIDS Memorial Garden.
