Former congressman Nick Rahall of Beckley has taken a position on the board of directors of the World Affairs Council.

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Former Congressman Nick Rahall of Beckley has been appointed to the board of directors of one of the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit organizations. 

The World Affairs Council of America is “dedicated to educating and engaging the public on global issues,” according to its website. The council provides 500,000 people a year with its network programming, the site continues. 

 Rahall said Wednesday he’s interested in helping to educate people about cultural issues in the United States and in foreign countries, particularly the Middle East. 

“That will be one of my areas of interest,” Rahall said. The council works on relationships between students together with the goal of educating U.S. students about other parts of the world and trying “to improve the image of America in the eyes of young people in that part of the world.”

Although the majority of the council is made up of business people with global interests, Rahall said the addition of him and Ray LaHood, former secretary of Transportation and also a former congressman, is a first for former elected officials…
