Nine W.Va. counties get school building money

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state School Building Authority approved roughly $5.6 million in funding for building projects in nine counties Monday out of a total of about 20 that applied.

Kanawha and Putnam counties were among the counties whose applications were rejected.

The “major improvement project” approvals ranged from $1 million for Berkeley County — to add six classrooms to Potomack Intermediate School near Martinsburg — to about $64,000 for Ohio County to make restrooms at West Liberty Elementary School and Middle Creek Elementary School, near Wheeling, fit for disabled people.

The other counties awarded were Greenbrier, Wirt, Gilmer, Marion, Fayette, Upshur and Lincoln. School Building Authority Executive Director David Sneed said the Legislature grants the agency about $5 million each year to disburse, and the extra money above $5 million given out Monday was carried over from last year.

Kanawha school officials wanted $400,000 to replace windows in Horace Mann Middle School. Putnam officials which wanted $1 million to add a computer lab, three other classrooms and bathrooms to West Teays Elementary School, which is running out of space for students…
