Morgantown faces time crunch on new sales tax

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — During the Tuesday, Oct. 28, regular meeting of the Morgantown City Council Committee of the Whole, City Manager Jeff Mikorski explained that the city is facing a timing issue in regard to the creation of the municipal sales tax outlined in the city’s successful Home Rule application.

“They’ve given us direction that if city council wants to have the sales tax implemented July 1, 2015, we have to provide them 120 days of notice after the council approves an ordinance,” Mikorski said.

In order to meet this deadline, Mikorski explained, council would have to approve a law by Jan. 30. To this end, council gave Mikorski the nod to begin setting up a public hearing for early December…
