Mooney wins second term in WV’s 2nd District

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., has been re-elected in West Virginia’s 2nd District.

“I’m feeling very good,” Mooney said. “There were five counties I did not win two years ago that we won this year. It’s looking good. I want to thank the voters for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve.”

Mooney defeated Democratic candidate Mark Hunt to retain his seat on Capitol Hill.

The 45-year-old Mooney, first elected in 2014 after moving from Maryland to Charles Town, is a former analyst for the House Republican Conference.

“It means they’re returning to office someone who wants to fight for conservative values,” Mooney said. “It’s going to be a long night with the president election, and if Trump wins, we’re looking forward to repealing Obamacare completely.”

The district stretches from Charleston to the Eastern Panhandle.

“I feel great watching the results come in county by county and see pretty good numbers that I’ve worked hard in,” Mooney said. “It’s rewarding and it’s a privilege to serve. I feel I represent everyone and I’m blessed to have the opportunity to continue in this position.”

Mooney is a former Maryland state senator and Maryland Republican Party chairman. He won the West Virginia seat in the House when incumbent Republican Shelley Moore Capito won the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Sen. Jay Rockefeller’s retirement.

Hunt, a 56-year-old attorney, served several terms in West Virginia’s House of Delegates.

“I want to congratulate Mark Hunt on a good race,” Mooney said. “He stood up for his party well. We’ve had pleasant conversations and I congratulate him on a well run race.”

Mooney said he looks forward to fighting for West Virginia.

“We need to revive the coal industry in our state,” Mooney said. “It’s been under attack for four years under the current president. I’m looking forward to working with congress to bring back coal jobs to our state.”

Mooney also said he’s proud of his service to the state.

“When you run for office, they vote for what you say,” Mooney said. “When you run for re-election, they vote for what you’ve done. I’m proud I’ve stood with my record and voters continue to re-elect me based on the work I’ve been doing.”
