MARTINSBURG, W.Va. –Fresh from a two-day trip to New York where she appeared on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” 17-year-old House of Delegates hopeful Saira Blair said she has been caught off guard by her newfound celebrity following her recent victory over Republican Larry Kump in the West Virginia state primary.
“I was entirely caught off guard and did not anticipate it being such a big story; however, I’ve been really psyched to see how many calls and messages that I’ve received from young people all across the country that are excited to get involved – not only young people, but young conservative people who share the same views that I do,” Blair said.
Blair, daughter of state senator Craig Blair, defeated Kump, 67, in the May 13 primary by 150 votes. She will face off against 44-year-old Democrat Layne Diehl in the November general election.
Blair, who graduates Hedgesville High School on Wednesday and will turn 18 in July, spent Sunday and Monday in New York, where she was interviewed by the hosts of the morning “Fox & Friends” talk show and also had the opportunity to meet Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
“It was a really great experience. I’m really glad I got to meet everyone. I got to meet Gov. Perry, and it was all really exciting. It was amazing. He was really supportive of my views and gave me a lot of good advice and was just excited to see young people involved,” Blair said.
