CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Former gubernatorial candidate Bill Maloney, who formally who filed an ethics complaint with the state Judicial Investigation Commission regarding Justice Robin Davis’ decision to not recuse herself over a controversial court case, said the reason behind his latest action is simple.
“The goal is just to get the truth out,” he told the Daily Mail on Friday. “To make sure people know they’re not above the law.”
Maloney’s filing comes after a December 2014 ABC News investigation claimed attorney Michael Fuller helped raise thousands of dollars for Davis’ 2012 re-election campaign and later purchased a private jet from a law firm owned by Davis’ husband, Scott Segal.
The ABC investigation further noted that Fuller’s firm financially benefited from a negligence lawsuit that appeared in front of the state Supreme Court.
Davis wrote the majority opinion of a 4-1 vote that forced Manor Care Inc. to pay $38 million to the family of an 87-year-old woman. Fuller’s firm represented the family and collected $17 million following the decision.
Davis previously denied any wrongdoing, calling media coverage over the sale of the airplane “politically-motivated reporting.”
