MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Macy’s has begun its winter hiring increase for seasonal workers at its Martinsburg eCommerce Fulfillment Center and expects to fill 2,900 jobs during the holiday season.
The center is now advertising walk-in interviews and an online applications process through Macy’s website, www.macysjobs.com. Walk-in interview hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, with starting pay advertised as $10.15 to $11.50 per hour.
The current hiring plan for the distribution center is about 2,900 seasonal workers, according to Jim Sluzewski, senior vice president of corporate communications and external affairs for Macy’s, in an email to The Journal.
The number of seasonal employees to be hired is lower than last year’s estimated seasonal hiring of about 3,600 employees. The decrease in seasonal employees is due to the fulfillment center having a larger year-round staff than anticipated, decreasing the need for additional holiday staffing this year, Sluzewski said.
However, the number of seasonal employes to be hired significantly exceeds the company’s original employment estimate.
“At the time the facility was announced – and later dedicated – we estimated about 700 temporary seasonal associates would be hired each year. So we are more than quadruple that initial estimate. This is a (reflection) of the continued growth of Macy’s online business and other initiatives that require direct-to-consumer fulfillment,” Sluzewski said.
In addition to an increase in seasonal employees, the fulfillment center has also exceeded the estimated number of full-time employees hired. The center’s year-round workforce is about 1,700 full-time equivalents, compared to the initial estimate for a core workforce of 1,200.
Since opening in July 2012, the fulfillment center at 333 Caperton Blvd. has exceeded Macy’s expectations, Sluzewski said. The facility processes and ships Internet orders for Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s to consumers throughout the East Coast.
“The Martinsburg fulfillment center continues to perform very well and is doing a great job serving Macy’s customers,” he said.
