WELCH, W.Va. — Billionaire gubernatorial candidate Jim Justice made a final payment toward more than $1 million in back taxes owed to McDowell County on Wednesday.
McDowell County Sheriff Martin B. West said Bluestone Coal Corporation, owned by Jim Justice, made a payment of $166,592 Wednesday, satisfying the tax bill owed to the county.
The back taxes were paid after the county hired an attorney and reached an out-of-court agreement for the taxes to be made in installments.
West went to the circuit court in 2014 against the Russian owners of the company and received a judgment for the $1.1 million owed to the county.
West said a $41,000 payment was made on Tuesday.
The first payment to the county of $780,323 was made on April 30, West said. The second payment of $181,582 was made on June 30.
