Interest level high for new I-79 bus service

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — About a dozen people were on board in Charleston for the inaugural run of the new I-Ride 79 bus service Tuesday between the Capital City and Morgantown.

Decorated in flashy, but sleek livery unique to the route, the bus will make stops along the way in or near Clendenin, Flatwoods, Weston, Clarksburg and Fairmont and will be the first public transportation option connecting northern and southern West Virginia in recent years.

Initial fares are set at a maximum of $15 one-way between Charleston and Morgantown and are lower between intermediate stops. However, fares for the first week of operation – though July 7 – are free as a promotion.

John Goebel, the vice president of Barons Bus Lines, said all passengers need to do is simply show up, though seats aren’t guaranteed during the free promotional period.

“You can’t drive cheaper,” Goebel said at Charleston’s Greyhound Station on Tuesday morning.

Since the new service was announced Friday, Goebel said the Barons Bus Lines office in Cleveland has received “between 200 and 300 calls” regarding the I-Ride 79 bus…
