FAIRMONT, W.Va. — As Juanita Mafield sat outside the one-room schoolhouse on the campus of Fairmont State University on Tuesday, she couldn’t help but recall memories of being a student and sitting inside the building.
She looked at the school and said it had changed over the years.
“The blackboard used to be clear across the room at the end, and it always seemed longer,” Mafield said.
In 1840 William Snodgrass erected a log building to be a school and church. The school was located in Rymer on Warrior Ford Road and was known as the Snodgrass School.
The school closed in the 1950s and was moved to the campus of FSU in 1962. It was located near what is now the Falcon Center, and in 1992 was moved to its current location near the Bryant Street entrance to campus…
