Cabell County latest to OK free school meal program

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — At the start of the 2016-17 school year all 27 of Cabell County’s schools will be included in a federal program that aims to feed children in poverty.

Following about a month of debate, the Cabell County Board of Education voted 4-1 to allow for all of the schools to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision, or CEP, program during its regular meeting at the Cabell County Schools central office Tuesday evening.

The board passed the measure with the understanding that district officials already planned to test the program at Huntington High School beginning in January.

 Nineteen of West Virginia’s 55 counties have the program at all of their schools, and another 27 counties have select schools participating in the program. Nine counties in the state have schools that are eligible for the program, but they do not participate.

Currently, 15 schools in Cabell County are part of the federal program, which allows public schools with high poverty rates to offer both breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students…
