Bluefield police dog more than earning its keep

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The newly-established K-9 program at the Bluefield Police Department is taking a bite out of the illegal drug trade in Bluefield.

Detective K. L. Adams and K-9 officer Patrolman M. D. Pertee were on a routine patrol with K-9 Ace in the Bland Street area Wednesday when they pulled over a 1976 Chevy Caprice which was for crossing the center line erratically. During the stop, Ace detected the presence of narcotics.

A search of the vehicle yielded 1/4 pound of marijuana, 12 grams of cocaine, sixty-seven hydromorphone pills and a handgun. A subsequent search of a residence connected to one of the occupants revealed nearly $19,000 in cash. The car involved in the traffic stop was seized as well.

The subjects, Robert Redd of Bluefield and Christoper Hairiston of Maybeury, both had existing records. Redd was on probation for a previous offense, and Hairiston was on parole. Both have been placed in the custody of the Probation and Parole Department, and have been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

This most recent pair of arrests is not the first contribution the Bluefield K-9 program has made to reducing the presence of illicit drugs on Bluefield’s streets, according to Detective Adams.

“This makes about one hundred times we’ve found dope with Ace in three months,” Adams said. “He’s found every type of pill you can think of, cocaine and marijuana.”

Ace’s handler, K-9 officer Mike Pertee, calculated the total statistics: “In three months alone, Ace has brought in over $60,000 in property, drugs and money…
