Those touched by Charlie Connor’s spirit asked to write personal notes

BECKLEY, W.Va. — In the 1990 Spirit of Beckley Tribute Journal, recipient Charles K. Connor Jr. was quoted as saying, “Leaving our area better than we found it — that’s what the Beckley Area Foundation is all about. Leaving a legacy for others to build upon is the responsible challenge we all face.”

Charlie and Nancy Connor moved to Beckley from Charleston in 1981. Charlie came here to become the president and publisher of Beckley Newspapers Inc. The Connors brought their community-oriented philosophy with them. Together with his staff at the newspaper, he worked to fulfill his mission of “Better Newspapers for a Better Beckley.”

 During his second year on the job, the newspaper moved into its current home on North Kanawha Street. In this facility, he did more than publish a newspaper. He utilized the well-lit, open space of the main lobby area to exhibit art and photography, and to welcome students from area schools who needed a place to perform in public. These uses of the newspaper lobby continue today…
