The inaugural Over the Edge event Saturday, June 17, will send participants, called “edgers,” rappelling down the side of the 17-story West Virginia Building, at 4th Avenue and 9th Street in downtown Huntington.

Matt Ward, director of development with United Way, said there are 30 spots still open for edgers.

In order to participate, each edger must raise a minimum of $1,000 in donations for United Way of the River Cities, which supports programs like the Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership, the Financial Stability Initiative and other education programs.

Ward said there is still plenty of time to reach that $1,000 goal.

“When you register online, get a unique URL code you can send out on all social media, inviting all friends, family and co-workers to give any type of donation they can,” Ward said. “On top of that, Over the Edge provides a lot of tools online to help you reach that goal. When you break it down, it’s an easy, attainable goal when you plan it out.”

To register to be an edger, visit firstgiving.com/unitedwayrivercities/overtheedge. Participants are provided with a personal fundraising web page, fundraising coaching, tools and encouragement.

No climbing or rappelling experience is necessary. Before rappelling, edgers will receive safety training from Over the Edge staff. Over the Edge puts on charity events for nonprofits all over the world.

Registration is $100. Registration fees go toward the $1,000 fundraising minimum.

The day of the event also will include a DJ and refreshments for those waiting back on land.
