Register-Herald group wins $1 million lottery prize

CHARLESTON — A lottery group of 27 players from the Beckley area were announced Tuesday as winners of $1 million after matching five of the six numbers from the Feb. 8 Powerball drawing.

West Virginia Lottery Director John Musgrave said the winners, now known as “The Beckley 27,” were represented by Diana Slone and Lisa Stadelman, two members of the group.

Both Slone and Stadelman, like most of the group, are employees at The Register-Herald. The group regularly pools funds to play both the Powerball and MegaMillions jackpot games.

“Everyone in the group was not able to attend the press conference because we had to keep the newspaper up and running … and on schedule,” said Slone.

Slone was the person selected to purchase the tickets for the group and was the first to learn of the big win…
