The Journal of Martinsburg seeking city editor

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Journal, located in Martinsburg, W.Va., is seeking a city editor to help lead its local news coverage.

The chosen candidate will supervise a staff of six full-time reporters and one full-time photographer, as well as help oversee a copy desk of five along with our news editor. He or she will also work with stringers and columnists to help fill out our daily editions, our weekly Weekender entertainment magazine and our intermittent special publications.

Martinsburg is a city of just under 20,000 people, located in West Virginia’s fast-growing Eastern Panhandle. It is about 90 minutes each from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The Journal reports on news in a three-county region in the panhandle: Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties. We are a community newspaper focusing on the issues and events that matter most to our citizens.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of newsroom experience, ideally as both a reporter and an editor. He or she will be confident enough to motivate and mentor reporters, through discussions about both stories and writing style. A firm understanding of newspaper layout, story placement and headline construction is a must, as are strong critical-thinking and organizational skills.

Mastery of the English language, grammar and AP style are required. In addition, the candidate should have a strong grasp of the importance of social media in the 24-hour news cycle.

Willingness to work some nights, weekends and holidays is necessary.

The Journal is owned by Ogden Newspapers, a Wheeling, W.Va.-based company strongly committed to community journalism.
