Beckley doctor to serve eight years in prison

BECKLEY, W.Va. — After pleading guilty in January to illegally prescribing pain medication and defrauding Medicaid and Medicare, Dr. Jose Jorge Abbud Gordinho was sentenced Wednesday to serve eight years in prison.

The 67-year-old native of Brazil previously practiced medicine at Responsible Pain and Aesthetic Management on George Street in Beckley. Although he was hesitant to admit guilt during his plea hearing, he agreed with all the facts presented during his sentencing hearing.

Among those facts, U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger said Gordinho requested sexual favors from patients in exchange for pain medication, he failed to terminate patients after they failed drug screens and he improperly prescribed more than 11,000 prescription pills. He also improperly billed Medicare $36,492 and Medicaid $11,943.
